How do I know if I'm getting enough rest?

Rest is a forgotten engine in our world. It may sound paradoxical to say Rest is an engine that moves us forward, but it is indeed true. Even when the body is resting, it is actively working and healing within. Even when the mind is resting, it is charging for its next use.

We often hear about rest in terms of getting 8 hours of sleep a day, but that number is not going to be the same for everyone. It will be affected by many factors, including how rested the mind is in general throughout the day. In many cases, it's possible to have a restful mind even as you work. Keeping this in mind, here are a few indicators of insufficient rest:

  1. Feeling tired immediately on waking up

  2. Waking up intermittently at night

  3. Falling asleep in the middle of the day without planning for it (not a planned nap, for example)

  4. Being unable to focus

  5. Being unable to perform or carry out tasks as well as you are capable of doing

So what can you do to ensure you're getting enough rest, both while you sleep and during the day, even as you work? Prepare yourself during the day!

If you find yourself unable to get to bed because of unfinished tasks, prepare a schedule during the day so you can avoid procrastinating. (If you find yourself repeatedly procrastinating and don't know why, consider activating Movement, as it may indicate a stuck emotion that is impeding your rhythm.) Make the connection between how your day goes and how your sleep goes at night. This can lead into setting up a sleep routine for yourself, which includes learning how to wean from screen time before it's time to sleep. To learn more details and practice how to do this and more, take our Jumpstart course.
